Open Studios Faro'24: More than 70 artists transform Faro into an open gallery

On October 11, 12 and 13, the city will be the epicentre of art and culture as it hosts the fifth edition of Open Studios Faro. Faro is set to be transformed into an open gallery with the fifth edition of Open Studios Faro (OSF). Held between October 11 and 13, the cultural event will see 25 spaces, including studios, houses, and headquarters of cultural and institutional associations, open their doors to the public with exhibitions and activities by more than 70 local and international artists.

This year, the event’s motto is “Recovery”, which aims to “revitalise the Algarve’s artistic capital and promote culture as an actual recovery currency for the community”, says the organisation run by Na Mouche – Associação Cultural.

After a one-year break and transitioning to a biennial format, OSF returns “stronger and more inclusive” with a programme that promises an even more accessible experience, as all activities are free and open to the public.

Over the course of three days, various locations throughout the city and surrounding areas will host exhibitions, chats, workshops, performances and meetings with artists, reaffirming a commitment to democratising access to art. “We want culture to be a true recovery currency, reaching all spheres of society. By involving local associations and artists from different backgrounds, we are working to integrate every voice and perspective”, highlights Daniela Garcia, one of the event coordinators.

Novelties and Highlight

One of the main novelties of this edition is the “Filling Tanks with Ghosts” exhibition, hosted in the former REFER warehouses at Faro’s train station and scheduled to be inaugurated on October 11 at 17h00. Curated by artist Miguel Cheta, the exhibition will bring together works by 17 national artists, offering the public an immersion in contemporary art.

In this year’s programme, 20 venues are open studios, six of which are improvised (pop-up studios), located in different associations and cultural spaces in the city. One of the main highlights is the Brazilian Consulate, which will host Jaqueline Arashida’s pop-up studio. During the event, the artist will create a collaborative painting with the public. The artwork will be donated to the Algarve Association of Parents and Friends of Mentally Diminished Children (AAPACDM), reinforcing this event’s commitment to community participation through art.

Other pop-up studios include Torre da Horta dos Cães, promoted by Faro 1540, arQuente, aeQuum, Alfa, and the Refer Studios, which welcome non-Faro-Resident guest artists, expanding the artistic reach throughout the city.

In addition to the traditional itinerary of studio visits, this year’s event expands to parallel activities with a programme open to the community and for all ages. In this sense, “the paid workshops will give way to free and collaborative sessions, reinforcing the inclusion and involvement of everyone, without economic barriers”, explained Toma Svazaite from the organisation.

Among the activities, highlights include “Domo da Pollinação” (Pollination Dome), a collective installation for families mediated by Margarida Botelho; the “Woodify” workshop, during which children can build wooden chandeliers with Emerson Ekberg; the “Histórias com Pontos” (Stories with Stitches) workshop, promoted by the Clube da Agulha at Faro’s Municipal Library; a round table on the creative process of the “Hierarquia do Medo” (The Hierarchy of Fear) play, with the artistic director and choreographer Noé at the aeQuum Association; and a meeting at painter Vicente de Brito’s house.

Promoting Inclusivity

This edition of Open Studios Faro celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Carnation  Revolution, remembering the importance of freedom, community participation and accessibility to culture for everyone. “We wanted to promote an inclusive event involving several local associations that work with historically underrepresented groups and communities in contexts of greater social fragility, such as aeQuum (LGBTQ+ association) and the Algarve Mental Health Association (ASMAL), integrating their users or associates in the creative process”, highlights Daniela Garcia.

With an eclectic and accessible programme, Open Studios Faro 2024 presents itself as a space for creation, dialogue and sharing, celebrating art as a vehicle for inclusion and cultural recovery.
