The Architecture of Olhão: Monuments, Modernst & More
The Architecture of Olhão: Monuments, Modernist & More is the second book by ArchiTourAlgarve focusing on the surprising architecture of Olhão. Following the first book, Cubist Architecture Olhão, which highlights the cubist architecture of the historic fishing districts of Barreta and Levante, this new volume explores monuments, modernist and other notable buildings, as well as several distinctive residential neighborhoods.
In total, 74 projects are presented, each accompanied by detailed descriptions of the architects involved (where known) and other relevant facts. The book opens with an introductory chapter on the origins of Olhão and its historical and urban development. It covers the rise of the canning industry, the arrival of the railway, and Olhão’s growth into the leading center of the canning industry in the Algarve, followed by the decline of this industry and the subsequent shift toward tourism.
The most recent spatial developments and new plans for the harbor area are also discussed. In addition, the book includes a quiz with 25 questions to test the reader’s knowledge; the answers can be found at the back of the book. The publication is further enriched with a number of drawings and sketches by the author, capturing the atmosphere of life in Olhão as seen through the eyes of an observer.
Presented in a convenient A5 format, the book contains 109 full-color pages and includes a fold-out map indicating the locations of all the featured projects.
