António Vicente de Castro
Architect of Portimão & Lagos in the Algarve
António Vicente de Castro (1920–2002) was one of the architects who helped shape the modern architectural landscape of the Algarve in the second half of the 20th century.
Born in Lisbon, he began his architectural studies there before moving to the School of Fine Arts in Porto, where he graduated in 1955. A year later, he returned to the Algarve, a region he had known since his youth in Lagos, and settled in Portimão, where he opened his own architectural practice.
From Portimão, Vicente de Castro developed a prolific career, designing approximately 120 projects across the Algarve. His work ranges from private houses and public buildings to schools and other community facilities, reflecting the changing ambitions and needs of a rapidly modernising region.
His architecture is part of the story of an Algarve moving beyond its traditional image – a generation of architects introducing new ideas, new forms and a distinctly modern way of living.
Explore the life and work of António Vicente de Castro and discover the buildings that remain part of the architectural heritage of Portimão and the Algarve.
