Huelva: An Architectural Guide
Huelva: A (free) Architectural Guide, the end result of a close and fruitful collaboration between the Ministry for Development, Land Use and Housing of the Government of Andalucía and the Huelva Architects’ Association, brings to a happy conclusion the collection of architectural guides designed to provide the general public with an accessible, up-to-date and accurate repository of information about the valuable architectural and urban heritage of the provincial capitals in the region of Andalucía.
This final publication in the series therefore draws to a close one of the key components of the Ministry’s active development policy, which also includes the Andalucian architecture awards, the organisation of exhibitions, the publication of other books and guides, and the promotion of various related activities.
Discover: 'El Muelle'
The Rio Tinto Company Dock is one of the heritage landmarks of the city of Huelva. From its construction in 1874 to its closure in 1975, with its hundred years of history, it is a masterpiece of engineering from the last quarter of the 19th century.
The mineral unloading dock, property of the Riotinto Mines Company, was rehabilitated in 2007 for the use and enjoyment of citizens. It has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
What was it built for?
It is conceived to provide an outlet for the mineral extracted in the mines in the north of the province of Huelva acquired by foreign companies in the mid-19th century. It marked the completion of the complex system devised by the English to transport mineral from the mines to Huelva, via the railway and culminating in the dock that allowed the loading and unloading of mining material on docked ships
REDEVELOPMENT OF THE LEVANTE PIER
A new waterfront district for Huelva
The Levante Pier is being transformed from an industrial port area into a new district connecting Huelva's city centre with the Odiel estuary.
THE PROJECT
The redevelopment covers a 1-kilometre waterfront strip of around 80,000 m².
Plans include:
→ Odiel Sports Marina with around 400 boat moorings
→ Museum of America
→ Cruise terminal
→ Restaurants, shops and training facilities
→ New green and public spaces
→ Underground parking for 500+ cars
→ A spectacular 33-storey tower as a new landmark for Huelva
A NEW WATERFRONT
The project aims to bring the city and port together, creating a new place to walk, work, exercise and enjoy the waterfront.
The redevelopment represents a major public-private investment, with the Port of Huelva contributing more than €20 million and total investment potentially exceeding €150 million.
