Hotel Garbe was a project designed by the famous architects of Portuguese modernism, Jorge Ferreira Chaves and Frederico Santana. It was designed between 1959 and 1962 and emerged as one of the pioneering developments in the hotel industry in the Algarve and in the municipality of Silves.

It reflects the designer's influence on the international modern movement, both in the architectural design of the facades and in the study and interest in the specification of communal, private spaces or services within and “although it overlooks the sea, it has no some way influence on the balance and harmony of the landscape, on the other hand, and with extraordinary 'power', it came to appreciate what was purest about it: the shape and color of the cliffs.” It started its activity with about 60 rooms and its customers belonged to a higher social level and were mainly English and Portuguese.
