Other 'Hotel"projects from architect Raúl Tojal:
Hotel das Arribas in Praia Grande in the municipality of Sintra (1961) and transformed in 1966 the "Complexo Turístico das Arribas". This complex was not so much a hotel with a pool, but rather a pool with a hotel. The adult pool was the largest in Europe at the time, measuring 100 metres long and 34 metres wide.
Today, “Hotel das Arribas” is a building with 24 apartments (with bedroom and kitchenette) called “Praia Grande - Sintra Apartments.
The 5 * “Hotel Estoril-Sol”, located in Parque Palmela in Cascais (1965). Known as the "Hotel of the Americans", it was for a long time the largest hotel in the country with 21 floors and 404 rooms.
Based on an international style culminating in a Mediterranean type of English brutalism. Equipped with four elevators for guests, three elevators for luggage and transport and four elevators for room service. The hotel had a garage for 200 cars, a gas station, a beauty salon, a hairdresser, a bowling alley, a bridge room, a shopping arcade, a travel agency, a panoramic restaurant and an Olympic swimming pool.
Until the April Revolution, the clientele came mainly from the American market. The endless list includes Princess Grace Kelly, Jorge Amado, John Wayne, Fred Astaire, Elis Regina, Ray Charles, Gilbert Bécaud, Liza Minelli, Shirley Bassey, Diana Ross...The demolition of the iconic building began in 2007, to make way for a new residential complex designed by architect Gonçalo Byrne.
