Modernist Beach Hotels 1950/70
"8 Modernist Beach Hotels" that helped determine the trend of the tourist boom in the Algarve in the 50s/70s and introducing 'Modern Architecture' to the Algarve. Often it were architects from Lisbon, who had extensive experience with this type of projects, such as architect Francisco Conçeicão Silva (Hotel da Balaia) with Hotel do Mar in Sesimbra or architect Raul Tojal (Hotel Algarve) with the 5 star Hotel Estoril Sol in Estoril.
But also architects from the Algarve, such as the 'modernist' architect Manuel Gomes da Costa from Faro, contributed to the tourist development of the Algarve in this period with two projects.
Of course, the arrival of the International Airport in Faro (1965) was important, just as the construction of the bridge "Ponte 25 de Abril" (then called the "Ponte Salazar") in 1966, which made the Algarve a lot easier to access from Lisbon.
