'One Thousand and One Nights' in Olhão

Ulla’s house in Olhão feels like something out of *One Thousand and One Nights*. Decorated with North African ornaments, which brings back memories of the Moorish dominance over the Algarve — a long time before Olhão existed — or of the many (smuggling) voyages made by local fishermen to the North African coast.

The flat roof, or *açoteia*, forms a small rooftop landscape where the little structures appear like follies. They offer not only shade and privacy, but also a peaceful space for rest, relaxation, and dreamy views over the city.
