Faro: 3 x Architect João Ramires Fernades

1968 - Saviour Swimmers Homes - Ilha/Praia de Faro

A small neighborhood of only six terraced houses. It is a type of 'Cubist' house that you would expect in Olhão or Fuzeta, because of the flat roofs and the beautiful outside stairs on the side. There is even one house with a top: a mirant. The pergolas on the street side are special.

They are marked by two 'classic'-looking columns with wooden beams above them. The chimneys are also special, but more because of their Algarve appearance than because of what you would expect from a cubist house: a block chimney. The plastered benches under the pergola and the beautifully curved fencing are touching, as is the tiling tableau that sets the tone as a half decorated platibanda.

1985 - Nónio Building

This Post-Modern looking apartment block at the Rua Pedro Nunes 4/5 got the Municipal Architectural Prize in 1990 from the City of Faro

1990 - Horta das Figuras

This conjunto Habitacional 'Horta das Figuras'. A 'luxury' residential area in Faro between the Forum Algarve and the Av. Calouste Gulbenkian. With colorful 'Post-Modernist' architecture in an attempt to create a Yup residential area with all land -based homes, free of through traffic of cars. The architect's attempt to make the view into the green of the gardens possible through holes in the 'classic - looking' garden walls has unfortunately been unsuccessful in almost all places by the "closing" of these openings. New homes in the typical style of the district are still being built now.

Architect João Ramires Fernandes was for many years architect of Faro City Council and the author of the book: "Viagem Pelo Improvavel " (Journey through the Improbable). The reason for writing this book was a notebook, given to him by navy captain Jorge Magalhães, which talks about fantastic events caused by the altered reality of space and time.

A strange coincidence gives rise to an expedition to the Amazon, which brings together two Portuguese researchers, an old merchant marine captain, a citizen of the world, and a Brazilian Indian, in search of a legendary saltwater lagoon, inhabited by animals and plants from other eras, but which was never found on previous expeditions.
